Ambassador LeBaron opens College Fairs
The U.S. Embassy kicked off the 2008-2009 university recruitment season with American college fairs at the Marriott and Movenpick Hotels.
U.S. Ambassador to Qatar Joseph LeBaron, accompanied by Sheikh Abdulaziz Jassim Al Thani, Director of Administration for Qatar Petroleum, opened the fair at the Marriott, which was visited by more than 600 students and their parents.
Representatives of more than two dozen U.S. colleges and universities had set up informational booths to help potential students understand more about the admissions process and the academic programs their schools offer.
Accompanying the Ambassador and Sheikh Abdulaziz at the college fair was Mr. Abdullah al-Sahlawi, Head of Corporate Training at Qatar Petroleum, who addressed the assembled students and parents, describing the role of U.S. colleges and universities as key to Qatar Petroleum’s development of a cadre of executives over the past three decades. Sahlawi said that Qatar Petroleum looked forward to continuing this partnership.
Ambassador LeBaron and Ms. Hissa al-Ali, Head of the Scholarship Division at the Higher Education Institute, inaugurated the fair at the Movenpick, which featured another 27 colleges and universities from across the country.
“Education is America’s most precious export,” the Ambassador said in his remarks, “and I am honored that Qatar’s leaders have chosen American institutions as partners in contributing to the advancement of their people and their economy.”
